The World of Haworthias Volume 2
Introduction
Volume 1 presented all the relevant data necessary for original research and the status
of the taxa. Volume 2 presents all the descriptions¹ for the
Haworthia names and their basionyms.
Original texts have been revised and reorganized after thorough analysis the significance
of their content. For ease of reading, and to make possible direct comparison between
the entries, the layout has been standardised.
In addition to the revised texts, the text of other authors has been added, especially for
older taxa, which mostly have mere Latin phrase names. As many of these texts are
unaivailable to the majority of people these days, I have tried to synthesise a complete
presentation out of fragmented information.
Descriptions have been published in different countries and languages over a period of more
than 200 years. To create a uniform layout, measurements have been converted to metric:
plants "mm", distances "km" and altitudes "m". "ø" is used for "diameter" or "across",
and "±" is used for "more or less". The different abbreviations for "about" are
converted into the full word. The abbreviation "C.B.S." (= Caput Bonei Spei) and the term
"SOUTH AFRICA" and analogous terms are interpreted here as "without locality" and the word
"CAPE" is used. "§" is substituted for the different representations for "section"
and the different abbreviations for "Haworthia" within the texts are simply represented
with "H.". The directions "North, East, South and West" are given as "N, E, S and W".
The "English translations" were carried out by Uwe Beyer or myself conform as closely as
possible to the original texts.
Italics have been used to make it easier to distinguish quotations from the original texts,
and a narrow Italics type has been used for the Latin diagnosis.

¹ Resende renamed the autonyms of several names (H. coarctata
var. coarctata, eilyae var. eilyae, greenii f. greenii, herrei var. herrei and reinwardtii
var. reinwardtii) with new names (H. coarctata var. haworthii, eilyae var. poellnitziana,
greenii f. bakeri, herrei var. poellnitziana and reinwardtii var. haworthii), but these
were illegitimate (ICBN Art. 52.1), because they were superfluous. These descriptions
are not included.
² Please notice that Bruce Bayer [1007] designated epitypes for several
lectotypes designated by Breuer et al., for example with H. emelyae. This suggests
that he considers the lectotypes as ambiguous, because epitypes are designated only when
lectotypes are "demonstrably ambiguous". Bayer does not demonstrate ambiguity. The validity
of the designated lectotypes by Breuer et al is not effected. Bayer's designation of
epitypes appears to shows his interpretation of the taxa are not accordance with the
ICBN.
